The collection of the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a part of the Nova Scotia Museum,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], represents the marine history of Nova Scotia and those regions or subjects that are considered significant or of interest to the people of Nova Scotia. The collection belongs to the people of Nova Scotia and is largely developed through the generosity of many individuals.
The Royal Canadian Navy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Canadian merchant marine, Nova Scotia small craft and shipwrecks are subjects well represented in the collection, much of which dates from 1850 to the present. The collection includes over 24,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 artifacts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], most of which are on display. They can be found in gallery exhibits and in several specialized display areas including:
Please Note: Several parts of the collection at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], including the entire Museum Library, have been temporarily put into storage due to building reconstruction. As a result,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Museum is not currently able to answer research enquiries or take photo orders. Regular collections access is expected to resume in Spring 2010.
The William Robertson Son Ship Chandlery,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],
a restored early 20th century ship chandlery where hundreds of artifacts including navigational equipment,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ships' fittings and supplies are displayed. Currently closed due to construction. Expected to reopen in summer 2010.
The recreated sail loft and ship carpenter's shop feature the tools of the sailmaker,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], rigger,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ship carpenter and carver.
The Museum's collection of 20,000 photographs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], its vessel plans and nautical charts are housed in,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and accessible through, the Museum's library.
The Museum has the largest collection of ship portraits in Canada with over 300 ship portraits of ships such as the Barque John A,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Harvie
The Museum also has an important small craft collection displayed in The Small Craft Gallery and two Boat Sheds. One of the oldest boats in the collection is the 19th century sloop Marila
