What is an alternative public school? In general, it is a school model created for students that are at-risk of not graduating from high school. These high schools have different formats and schedules than a traditional high school. Here is a list of some of the differences between regular public high school and an alternative high school.
* [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Regular school usually follows a 5 day [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] per week schedule. Alternative high schools might meet only 4 days per week.
* Regular schools focus on academics. While [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] alternative schools may also focus [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] on helping students understand, compensate, or correct the issues that are placing them at risk of not graduating. Examples are behavior issues, health issues, etc.
* Traditional high schools have large class size (15 to 25 students). An alternative schools may only have 5 to 15 students per class.
* Regular schools often times have to keep pace with the timing and curriculum of the school district. Alternative [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] high schools often have older materials and curriculum than the traditional schools in the school district.
When thinking about an alternative public high school for your child's education, it is very important that you understand what you are getting. Sometimes alternative high schools [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] have a hard time getting certified teachers to work for them. As a result, teachers at an [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] alternative school often do not have teacher certification. Occasionally in the alternative classroom, there is no regular teaching. Students will work independently out of a text book or on the computer.
There will be a teacher in the classroom, but sometimes the teacher is there to watch the class only and can not help students with a particular topic. I have found that some alternative schools do not have traditional math tests. This means that a grade is determined by take-home assignments and no [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] other form of [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] exams. Students can [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] take work home and finish them either on their own, with help from others, or even allowing someone else to do the lessons for them. Their grades are not [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] based on showing that they understand a math topic. This can mean that students can finish their alternative school with no comprehension of what was being taught.
I am not against alternative high schools, but I do expect students to get a good education and not simply a piece of paper that says "You Graduated!" Remember, an education's purpose is to help children succeed in the future. A high school diploma is just a piece of paper. If you can't better your life with it, it is useless. Before choosing an alternative school, ask questions and voive concerns that you have. The thought of your child graduating is an exciting thought. Just make sure it is worth the piece of paper it is printed on.
