Novak Djokovic is ninth player to reach 100 weeks as ATP No. 1
LONDON, Sept. 23 () -- Novak Djokovic on Monday became the ninth player to hold the No. 1 spot in the ATP rankings for a total of 100 weeks.Djokovic was atop the rankings for 53 weeks from July, 4, 2011, to July 8, 2012, and regained the No. 1 spot on Nov. 5, 2012. He's been No. 1 since then.Although he's poised to catch Andre Agassi for eighth place for most weeks at No. 1, Djokovic will need to defend his title at next week's China Open while hoping that Rafael Nadal doesn't get as far as that tournament's finals to keep the top spot. Not that Nadal needs extra incentive but he's eighth on the all-time list with 102 weeks at No. 1 (Bjorn Borg is seventh with 109). To keep Djokovic at bay, he'd need to reach the final. If he gets there, win or lose, Nadal would regain the No. 1 ranking.Roger Federer tops the list with 302 weeks as No. 1.Gilles Simon defeated world No. 8 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final of the Moselle Open in France Sunday and moves up two spots to 14th. The winner of the ATP's other event last week -- the St. Petersburg Open -- was Ernests Gulbis, who improves his ranking nine places to 27th.Four Top 10 players are in action this week, with No. 4-ranked David Ferrer and 10th-ranked Stanislas Wawrinka leading the field at the Malaysian Open while sixth-ranked Tomas Berdych and Mo. 9 Richard Gasquet are entered in the Thailand Open. The ATP Top 10, listing player's name, home country and rankings points:1.
