A naked betrayal of tradition
At this time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Test cricket needs to hark to its traditions more urgently than at any previous amount of time in the game's history. Such as the recently concluded Lions rugby tour of Nigeria,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the idea of five-day cricket is an anachronism that dwindling from the world's sports-lovers can comprehend, and as such, every series that does not capture the imagination feels like a betrayal of the extremely soul from the sport. Last week, the Lions won in glorious fashion in Johannesburg to prove the enduring price of their eclectic make of entertainment,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], however the cost of the 3-0 whitewash they avoided could scarcely have been put in words.
On Tuesday, Sri Lanka and Pakistan - finalists in the gloriously received World Twenty20 last month - concluded an enthralling first Test in Galle. Sri Lanka emerged victorious by 50 runs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], having defended a fourth-innings target of 168, but there cannot have been more than 2000 fans to witness the entire four-day contest. The format is dying a death in a world that has no time for subtleties, and therefore, the idea of surplanting the Ashes - of all landmark series - is the greater unforgivable.
Aside from other things, you have the sheer ugliness from the bid that Glamorgan laid out prior to the E(W)CB - the county's offer "murdered" those of their rivals, in the unbridled opinion of their chairman, Paul Russell. It is ignorant to suggest, however (as has been aired in several branches from the media this week) the opening Ashes Test has traditionally been staged at Lord's - that tradition actually goes back to 2005,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that is Ground Zero as far as the hype of this year's contest is concerned. Which, alas, is part from the problem. Any make an effort to manufacture a repeat of that magnificent the summer time is surely doomed to anticlimax.
Test cricket shares many of its finest traits with the equally maligned pursuit of ornithology - for every priceless sighting of a lesser spotted grebe, or perhaps a finish to rival the Edgbaston Test of 2005, there can be a great deal of holding out, and that's a fact that enhances the experience for that aficionados, but leaves everyone else having a stake in the game - in particularly the money-men - distinctly twitchy.
Maybe Cardiff is going to stage a four-and-a-half day contest of thrilling intensity and magnificent cut-and-thrust,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], whereby, there will be an extended sigh of respite from the Valleys, and a pleasing kerching from the tills. But regardless of the result,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it doesn't disguise the iniquity from the decision to begin with. The Ashes is special since it has endured for 130 years, oblivious to fads, fashions and also the whims of the changing market. At this uncertain time for the game, with Twenty20 cricket tearing through tradition, it's crazy to allow the game's anchor to tug in this manner.
* England and Wales Cricket Board
I have not a problem with Cardiff hosting any test match,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ashes or otherwise, but why does no-one ever ask the question why London is guaranteed a minimum of 2 test matches every summer, and even as we have 2 touring teams inside a summer they will undoubtedly get 3 tests. If Lords needs to host each touring team for "tradition" then the Oval surely needs to wait with all the rest and never seemingly have it handed on a plate each summer, you will find cricket fans all over Britain although the E(W)CB only seems to think those who work in the south are the real fans.
Pardon me, it's the England WALES cricket board,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is it not? How long would we now have had to wait for you English to condescend to provide Wales an Ashes test? Half a century? A century?
Well, Wales showed initiative in backing itself to host a game title in the pinnacle of cricket - The Ashes. It also put it's money where it's mouth is. A bigger real question is why London gets TWO ashes tests,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], how much longer can that be justified?
Lest you people over the border forget,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we provided you, via Glamorgan, together with your newest Ashes winning coach!
Fantastic day for English WELSH cricket,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Wales is now firmly on the cricket map. Cope with it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]!
I suspect the question continues to be there in some people's minds about Cardiff, particularly with Manchester being not allowed. Money always talks, even with the data of Stanford's millions(worse compared to apple in Eden, that one ) Edgbaston will be a good place to begin the series,or even Durham. But that said when the track was revealed as not being moribund and also providing an excellent day's entertainment then playing at this venue became acceptable, and it is probably nice for people who live in the West who are able to actually AFFORD a ticket to pitch up to this wellput together venue beside the Taff for any Test. Anyway which was a good day for Cardiff to start.
What next? A return towards the halcyon times of that old Empire? Get the colonies back and reinstate the Imperial Cricket Council? After all, as in the 1880s, who needs every other Cricket than between the Old Country and also the Old Enemy? The 'Crown Jewel' indeed.
Leave Cricket in the hands of these traditionalists and the only thing left of an Ashes Test would be the dyspeptic old fogies, drooling and drooping drowsily in their cheap seats in the Members' End. Leave it to these 'traditionalists' and we'll have 'gentlemen ought not make any profit from playing Cricket' (see MCC). Leave it to these traditionalists and we'll only visit a game that's volubly and vehemently in opposition to professionals,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], player's unions, women, Asians, Associates and everyone else.
It's taken 130 years and a desperate and naked commercial enterprise to create an Ashes Test to Wales. Allow the traditionalists, and it would have remained the England and Wales Cricket Board only in name. Cause Sophia Garden!
I'd agree that the Test should have attended a recognised ground, and especially the money and greed really should not be the deciding factor. But I think it's far worse the first Ashes Test is starting on the Wednesday - so the two days probably to determine no play would be the two days over the past weekend. And once again all up to money. The ECB were confident enough that a small ground would sell out anyway, and of course whether it does get interesting about the 5th day, they're more prone to sell more tickets. But otherwise it's a blatant disregard for the millions following by TV or radio who do not get the main bits of the exam over their weekend anymore.
Andrew Miller was saved from the lifetime of drudgery within the City when his car caught fire in route for an interview. He took this like a sign and fled to Pakistan where he witnessed England's historic victory within the twilight at Karachi (or thought he did, at any rate - it had been darker and uneven to inform). Along with Pakistan, he's covered England tours in Sri Lanka,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Bangladesh, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, as well as the World Cup in the Caribbean in 2007
India's batsmen are often unstoppable in Rajkot-like conditions. One of the reasons for their failed chase is that age-old conundrum in Indian one-day cricket: whether to go with seven specialist batsmen or not
