Back in 1982-83 there was a pretty good junior A hockey team in Markham Ontario,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which played against the team I covered at the time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Orillia Travelways.
There were two players on that team that played on the same line,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], one a 16-year-old rookie who would score 50 goals and be named the Ontario Junior Hockey League rookie of the year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the other his slightly older centre,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who would be named the OJHL MVP that year. Neither was drafted into junior hockey when he was eligible,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and while one went on to major junior stardom and the other on to NCAA stardom,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], neither was drafted into the NHL either.
Well the 16-year-old,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Steve Thomas,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], went on to a heckuva an NHL career and his centre,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Adam Oates,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], turned out to be one of the best set-up men in NHL history.
Oates was deservedly selected to the Hall of Fame a few minutes ago,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], capping a whirlwind day in which he was also named the head coach of the Washington Capitals. Has anyone in NHL history ever had a double dip like that on the same day?
as intense as they come,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], has always been noted for his stick-to-it-iveness and he stuck to it so much and so well that he walks in through the front door of the Hall of Fame in his hometown. Like Thomas,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he is an example to every young player who finds his way blocked by the opinions of others. Their solution: change the opinions.
