Argo safety Jordan Younger knew his team had a chance to play for that Grey Cup when they went into hostile Regina in October and beat the Saskatchewan Roughriders 31-26.
Sure, the win clinched a playoff spot. But there is something far more.
The Argos bought to their entire system together, watching game films together, knowing exactly what to expect from the opposition together,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not just as individual parts of a squad. Not to mention, quarterback Ricky Ray, who missed four games with a strained left knee, was back, and looked fantastic despite losing to Winnipeg in his return the week before.
The Argos had lost their previous three games but they've now won four straight since defeating the Roughriders as they go to Sunday's 100th Grey Cup against the Calgary Stampeders, winners of 5 straight.
"I knew we'd be all right following the Saskatchewan game. This is when we heated up. It was where we turned our season around,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Younger, the team's defensive captain, said on Wednesday. "It wasn't that our degree of effort changed. Which was a few days that everybody committed to understanding as a team. Normally everybody watches film and they do their individual parts but when you watch film together and also you problem solve, then problems are a lot easier to determine once they are available in a game title.
"When adjustments were made in the game, it was bang, bang. It didn't take two or three plays. Lions in Ottawa. Now 34, Younger is the leader of Toronto's tight defensive secondary that has been playing its best football of the season throughout the playoffs. He's also the main one organizing card games and dominoes in their hotel now to maintain everybody loose and together.
"The excitement level is one of the same,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Younger, who together with cornerback Patrick Watkins had five interceptions, tied with three others for second overall in the CFL. "But being a veteran now, I've got a different perspective.
"It was all about me the first time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. My experiences and just how I felt about it. Now I sit back and watch the young guys and how they respond to things,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. It's like type of residing in the moment during my shoes but also in their shoes."
Younger thought the 2004 win would be his first of many Grey Cups. Mostly, the Montreal Alouettes denied him another shot. The Als beat the Argos in the playoffs in 2005, 06 and 2010. He also lost in 2008 when he played for Edmonton before returning to Toronto.
"We had a veteran group. We were all returning. I thought there is not a way on earth this team can't win," Younger said. "And that was one of the lessons I discovered how important it's to possess a defence and offence that complements each other."
When the Argos opened their season in Edmonton, Younger was starting his ninth season. The other four players within the secondary were starting their first CFL game. He's surprised how well they've meshed.
"I knew we'd potential. I knew (Grey Cup) was possible due to all the moves that were made,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Younger said. "I knew with Ray we would have a chance because we had an elite quarterback. I knew coach Scott Milanovich was implementing the Montreal system, which I believed was the toughest to prevent.
"With a hostile defence to fit both of these,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I knew we would have the opportunity as we could place it altogether because we'd a lot of pieces. But what's surprised me the most is when fast everybody bought into the bump-and-run,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], man-to-man defence. It's hard to play that because of the degree of difficulty. You need to be unbelievably confident. It's a proof of Chris Jones, the evil genius, to have found the people,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who can do this. We experienced phases where i was so frustrated with how much man-to-man we played."
