Celtic defeat of Sporting Portugal marks historic night at Fenway Park

On July 21, Glasgow Celtic's defeat of Sporting Portugal on a sudden death penalty (6-5) after a 1-1 tie marked an historic night at Fenway Park. A roaring crowd of 32,162 soccer fans mostly wearing Celtic green and white-striped jerseys took over Boston's legendary baseball stadium on a hot summer night for the first time in 42 years. The DropKick Murphy's I'm Shipping up to Boston,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not organ music,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], blasted throughout out the stadium, and the crowd broke into chants and songs like Ole, ole, ole as the match intensified,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and there was a pitch invasion by an enthusiastic fan. and soccer icon Pele. Celtic previously played at Fenway Park on May 30, 1931,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], where they were defeated,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ironically,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], by the New York Yankees of the American Soccer League.
The nets were positioned in spitting distance of first row seats,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the diamond visibly filled in with grass,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the green monster loomed high. The game kicked off with a small brass section in bow ties from the Boston Pops playing the national anthem and the crowd cheered when Celtics players entered the field and booed Sporting,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], also well-represented in the crowd. The game featured stellar rosters and Celtic's 6'4 creative forward Georgios Samaras, who starred for Greece in the recent World Cup and improved his reputation here by scoring the penalty for Celtic in the 71st minute. The first half started slowly, with both teams in preseason, but the pace picked up after the half and crescendoed as Helder Postiga headed in the equalizer for Sporting off a rebound in the 88th minute and both teams fought for the game winner before the whistle. The penalties went 5 and 5,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but Liedson's shot soared high and substitute Paul McGowan put away the final penalty for Celtic.
The unique qualities of Fenway Park were appreciated by Celtic Coach Neil Lennon and he didn't discount a possible future pairing there with historic rival Rangers, as originally proposed.
"It's not like your normal stadium,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], really,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Lennon. "Is it the Green Monster you call it? You have people sitting up on top of that. It's the history and tradition of the stadium as well,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's not as corporate as a lot of stadiums would be, so generally it's a different kind of atmosphere. We really enjoyed it. Just the fact that it's one of the most famous stadiums in the world,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to come and play a football game here was pretty unique."
"I think anywhere is a good match-up for Rangers-Celtic," quipped Lennon about the possible pairing of the two fierce rivals at Fenway. "You'll be guaranteed the crowd and you'll be guaranteed a different sort of atmosphere. But tonight was fantastic too. Both sets of fans made the game what it was,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], made the experience what it was."
