Alan Sherbourne is eyeing the finish line one step at a time
Alan Sherbourne is putting one foot in front of the other. Step-by-step he's getting closer to his goal.
"I wanted to get back in shape in shape and do what I love to do which is stay active,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said.
Sherbourne's journey is leading him to the IOA Corporate 5K,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], an annual event in Orlando that brings together more than 15,000 participants from 750 companies to walk or run 3.1 miles around downtown.
"Track Shack came to an orientation at Cubic,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Sherbourne, who works as a mechanical assembler building rocket simulators. "Ever since then the first day when they opened up registration,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I registered paid my fees and I'm ready go."
But at the start of this year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Sherbourne didn't think it was possible. While serving in the United States Army Reserves he started having back spasms and pain in his right arm. The once slender,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 150-pound officer who was in tip-top shape even looked different.
"I gained close to 100 pounds,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], over 250 just from not exercising,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the depression."
The 25-year-old was diagnosed with scoliosis,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. It's a medical condition in which a person's spine is curved,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. He was discharged after four years of service in 2011,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Sherbourne remembers the pain.
"There were mornings I couldn't tie my shoes, couldn't bend over and pick up anything."
That's when the former soldier says he was tired of being sick and tired. His wife,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Nydia,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], began to see a change.
"Before he used to be like I can't do exercise,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I can't do anything, just the computer," she said. Now he's like let's go to the gym."
With each step that pain is becoming more manageable,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Sherbourne hasn't been training for long but he walks four to five times a week,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Already he's lost 30 pounds,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. That's thanks in part to Sherbourne's determination but also his employer and co-workers.
"Cubic really emphasizes health and they want everybody to get into shape and stay fit. Always promoting the 5K," Sherbourne said. "We've got TVs everywhere,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], nobody's at the TVs anymore. Everybody's getting ready,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they're excited and motivated and we're doing it as a team."
It was less than two months ago that Alan even thought it was possible to walk in the IOA Corporate 5K,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Since his training has gone so well he's setting his sights on maybe running across the finish line next year.
