Farewell To The Father Of The Octopus Shoe,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
The story of how Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman developed a running shoe sole from a waffle maker has become a minor legend. For Kihachiro Onitsuka, the founder of the Japanese athletic shoe company Asics, inspiration came in the form of an octopus salad.
Onitsuka,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who passed away Sunday at 89,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], went into the shoe business following World War II after tiring of selling bootleg beer. In the ensuing decades,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he built his Kobe-based company into the biggest athletic footwear and apparel maker in Japan and the fifth-biggest in the world,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with sales in the last fiscal year to March 31 of 194 billion yen ($1.69 billion).
reRedditOnitsuka started out trying to make basketball shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], betting that the sport was about to take off in Japan. His initial attempts ended in failure, but on a hot summer evening in 1951, he found inspiration while chewing on a salad of cucumber and cold octopus. He realized that if he could mimic the concave shape of the octopus suckers in rubber,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he could create a shoe capable of gripping a basketball court, allowing the wearer to stop on a dime.
Thus was born the Onitsuka Tiger, which was worn by the Japanese Olympic basketball team in 1956 and generations of Japanese gym class students.
In 1977,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], after merging with two Japanese clothing makers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Onitsuka changed his eponymous company name to Asics,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], an acronym for the Latin motto sana in corpore sano" -- a sound mind in a sound body.
Asics evolved into a general sporting goods maker,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], selling skiing, baseball,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], swimming and golf products,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and scored notable success with its running shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], putting out a well-regarded line of high-end trainers and racing shoes. Onitsuka borrowed from the air-cooling methods used in motorcycles to create vented marathon shoes.
After Japan's bubble economy burst and the domestic ski market went into a tailspin,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Asics fell into the red for eight years from 1992.
The company got back on its feet in part by going back to its roots -- the Onitsuka Tiger,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which had been retired in the late 1970s. It reissued the basketball boot in Europe in 2000,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], hoping to capitalize on the mania for retro sneakers. The thin soles and old-school design proved a hit, and its once-dowdy gymwear became the height of fashion. It got a boost in 2003 when Uma Thurman appeared in the movie Kill Bill decked out in Tiger wear -- a yellow sweatsuit and a pair of gold-colored Onitsuka Taichi sneakers with black stripes. The company has since opened 23 standalone Onitsuka Tiger boutiques in Japan,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as well as in Paris,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Berlin,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], London and Seoul, and it collaborates with fashion luminaries like Issey Miyake on sneaker designs.
