Buffoons make it easy
Journalism is a superb job. I usually felt that things i do beats working for a full time income. Some of my detractors may accept that comment, although they may apply a completely different connotation. Anyway, the days I really like as being a journalist usually involve stories like this.
Out in British Columbia, a provincial election has been waged amidst a wave of candidate resignations. First, it had been NDP candidate Ray Lam who withdrew after risqu photos of him put together on his Facebook page. The NDP campaign headquarters said the photos weren't posted on his networking site when he put his name toward be a candidate. Apparently, within an act of unadulterated political stupidity,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Lam went out and posted the grin-and-grope shots AFTER his name was put on the ballot.
"Okay, rent campaign office, print up signs and brochures, sign up volunteers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], create fundraising list and last, but not least,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], remove pictures of unidentified friends with their hands down my pants from Facebook page. campaign claimed another hapless victim. Solicitor General John van Dongen, the Liberal incumbent in Abbotsford,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], was forced to resign his cabinet post after it had been learned his driver licence have been suspended for accumulating nine speeding tickets. The province former top cop,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who remains an applicant in this election,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], had his licence suspended before the writ being dropped but he didn't mention this setback to Liberal Premier Gordon Campbell.
Media outlets within the lower mainland were built with a field day with van Dongen predicament. Aiding their cause was a photograph taken in February, when van Dongen released a new, high-security driver licence. The look from the now disgraced former cabinet minister holding an enormous,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], novelty-sized driver licence is too perfect.
Are you able to imagine the afternoon story meeting where the Van Dongen story was discussed:
News Editor: "This just in Van Dongen has resigned his post as solicitor general because he lost his driver licence,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Photo what art do we have of Van Dongen,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]?"
Photo editor software kit: "Well,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], let check the archives. I've got a shot of him making an announcement behind a podium, another of him making an announcement beside a podium, another of him in the podium factory standing on a forklift and whoa!!!!!! here among him holding a huge, OVERSIZED NOVELTY DRIVER LICENSE!!!!"
Managing Editor: "Nice work boys,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. This is some of those days I proud to be a newspaperman,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]."
Of course,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there are days when it sucks to be a journalist. Like the day you are writing a column, as I did about the weekend, about Manitoba next fixed-date election. Now,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I fully aware that the date of the next election is October 4, 2011. However for reasons that merely a top neurosurgeon could figure out, I wrote October 2010.
Allow the spanking begin. Thanks to those readers who gently stated the mistake. For individuals who ripped us a new orifice, I guess I had that coming.
In making this error, I join an extended and illustrious listing of otherwise accomplished journalists who suffered brain farts while near the computer keyboard. I love to say it had been my only brain fart, but I be lying. I remember when i wrote two separate background features on an upcoming federal budget where I referenced Finance Minister Michael Wilson. Problem was, it was 1995 and also the finance minister was Paul Martin. To add to the absurdity of the mental block was the truth that the same editor handled the copy, and both times bought into my brain fart. Sheesh.
Sometimes, stupid mistakes are not the result of brain farts. Sometimes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], factors at night control of your average scribe conspire to produce a tragic result. My favourite story involves a reporter (not me thankfully) who was calling around for reaction to a provincial budget. The reporter desired to talk to someone from a lobby group that represented seniors. She found the name of the president and also the phone number within our contact file,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and called. She introduced herself, asked if she was speaking to Joanne Smith (the actual name escapes me now) so when the woman said yes, proceeded to collect some biting comments about the budget. Write story; file story; Miller time.
The following morning, the reporter got a phone call from Joanne Smith. "Who did you call last night for comment, since it wasn me?" an angry Mrs. Smith said. "Joanne Smith," said the reporter. "What number have you call?" Once the reporter gave her the telephone number, as it turns out the interview have been conducted with Mrs. Smith 95-year-old mother, who was not entirely of this world. Write correction; file correction; pour can of Miller too deep.
Sometimes, journalism is simple and satisfying. In other cases, it feels like you walking through a mine field with clown shoes on.
He's had bricks thrown at him in riots following a 1995 Quebec referendum, wrote stories that helped in part to free three wrongly convicted men,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], met Fidel Castro,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], interviewed three Philippine presidents,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], crossed several borders in Africa illegally, chased Somali pirates in a Canadian warship and had several guns pointed at him.
Quite simply, he TMs had every experience a journalist could even hope for. He has also been lucky enough to be a two-time nominee for a National Newspaper Award,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], winning in 2003 for investigations.
Other awards include the B TMNai Brith National Human Rights Media Award and nominee for that Michener Award for Meritorious Public Service in Journalism.
