Most competitors such as K Shoes and K parent-company Clarks have transferred production overseas,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], leaving Hotter as the largest shoe manufacturer in the UK.
Its factory in Skelmersdale,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Lancashire,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], produced 1.3 million pairs last year.
The firm sells shoes through 200 independent retailers and a web site but also has 16 stores of its own including one at Gretna Gateway Outlet Village,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The Carlisle branch is one of 25 due to open in 2011,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The Next chain relocated to the Lanes in 2007,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. It was temporarily occupied by a clearance store but has been closed since earlier this year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Although Hotter says it has yet to finalise the move,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it has already put in a planning application to the city council to refit the Grade II-listed four-storey building.
The shop will be confined to the 2,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],100sq ft ground floor with staff facilities upstairs.
The planning application says: new installation is of a scale and proportion to suit the building envelope and to be in harmony and keeping with surrounding shop fronts along English Street,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. next door to the old Next unit has closed but is understood to be opening as another high street chain shortly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
