Do you ever regret buying cheap
I buy everything used. Always. Used fridge,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], used clothes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], used cars, etc. i feel like 1/4 of the time I regret it. We bought a used lawn mower last month and it turned out to be a piece of junk. I just wish we could go buy a new one that we know would work. Sometimes i just get tired of used stuff that breaks Smutny we are starting to look at buying a house and part of me wants to buy a cheap house and have lots of room in our budget, but part of me wonders if 5 years and 2 kids later I will regret that too and think, "why didn't we get a better house" more room, newer appliances,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], doesn't need weekend after weekend spent "fixing up" since we can technically afford more.
I've been proud of it in the past, but now I feel a bit embarassed buying cheaply. It really depends on the item and lately we have been buying better if possible, but planning ahead for it.
Still,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the $2k car I bought that kind of sucks and only gets 20mpg feels like a waste because I put $1200 into it already. I really want to get rid of it and buy a more economical car that won't need repair.
For clothes I have often bought cheap $1-3 pieces for me and then they end up being loathed later. Like the shirts get stretched out quickly or the jeans start to have runs near the pockets,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. I can't wait to be at a point in life to be able to buy whatever clothes I want without batting an eye.
I agree, buy better quality and buy less often, but within reason. Buya used car thats 15k, not 30k, but not 2 k and you will be happier,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], cloths I make an investment, except for the kids,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and then I am 50/50, i buy good jeans, good shoes, but shop a lot of consignment for the rest. I would not compromise too much on a house, go middle of the road but look for maintainence free (no such thing I know) but as close to it as possible, look for what can and what will go wrong with a house before you buy, My MIL always always always goes the cheepest route she can go, and then balks at me when we spend more money on something, i cant believe you would spend that much, but then she is always complaining that she cant walk becuase her shoes hurt her feet, aka shoes she bought from dollar general, or she is paying someone to mow her lawn becuase her lawn mower is broken, AGAIN, but hey, she got a good deal on a lawn mower. etc. Backpack up above, yep we spent the money and it is being used for the next year again. I think most of the time going the cheepest way leaves you paying more and frusterated more in the end. I paid 11k for my car ten years ago and i'm still driving it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], paid it off six years ago,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and I'm about to have to go buy a new car now. My husband we paid 15k for his car 7 years ago, paid it off3 years ago, still going strong,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], giving us time to save for CASH for a newer used car.
I buy both - quality used stuff, or at times new stuff (though when shopping new,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we sale shop).
We buy a used car - but not a $1 or $2K clunker that is going to cost us headaches and more money than it's worth.
We buy quality used clothes - they must be in excellent,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], almost like new condition (not going to buy stuff that's worn out and is going to fall apart). We tend to buy name brand stuff too for the kids at least, (used,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or new on super clearance), because I resell all the children's clothes, so when I'm buying clothes I try to think of the resale potential.
We'll buy quality used toys (same thing, must be in excellent shape), or new stuff on sale.
Shoes we never buy used. We always buy new, and we buy quality. I spent $45 of my New Balance sneakers. I could have gotten $15 sneakers at Walmart, that would have killed my feet and fallen apart in a few months.
For the children,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we buy quality shoes as well, because they're in them all day, every day. We buy New Balance, Nikes or Sketchers as those are the brands that last the best (for my kids). Consequently, they each only have 4 pairs of shoes (2 pairs of sneakers, a pair of rain boots, and a pair of dress shoes). Now, for the shoes that aren't worn as often, the rainboots and dress shoes, yes, we will buy cheaper but still new.
Stuff for around the house, it all depends. Linens are always bought new. Dishes. honestly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we haven't bought dishes in 10 years, lol. but I'm assuming when we do they'll be new. Appliances we'll buy used if we can get quality, but often we'll sale shop: ie. we bought a brand new ceramic top stove for only $399 on sale at Lowe's. The same stove used was selling for $250 on Kijiji/Craigslist. So, we could have taken a chance on the used stove, or for only $150 more, we got a brand new one with 3 years warranty.
I should just clarify what I said about the house. We were recenlty looking at two houses that we liked, built at the same time.
