Johnson proves basketball prowess,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
- the Bucknell Bison - had a date with the powerful UConn Huskies in the NCAA tournament on Thursday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Honk if you've heard of Bucknell University, who as things turned out lost 81-52 to the Huskies, although Bryson and his #12 jersey got some air time on The Score (he hit three three-pointers for the underdog Bison). His participation in the NCAA tournament was a brief one,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but just getting to March Madness is a tremendous achievement, let alone doing it as a product of the western side of Pictou County,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which is hardly a basketball hotbed.
It helped immeasurably that Bryson Johnson's mom Peggy knows how to teach basketball - that's not a local secret - and it also helped that he had two older brothers (Nathan and Ben) who are both very good players, and could teach their younger brother a thing or two about basketball (not to mention amp up his game just through sibling rivalry,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I'd guess). All of them are intelligent players,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], good shooters from the floor,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], smart kids who love the sport. Some might want to say that Bryson's accomplishment says great things about hoops in Pictou County, but I think it's something else. I think it has more to do with family tradition.
For a lot of basketball fans, these games of March Madness are better than the NBA. Athletic kids instead of lumbering,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], oafish big men who scream and pound their chests when they throw down a routine dunk; wire-to-wire heartstoppers; college-aged dreams and little-known schools creating upsets. Old Dominion? Butler? Bucknell? What are these things, exactly?
According to exhaustive research,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which mostly consisted of turning on a computer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], typing in Bucknell and perusing the Internet for 10 minutes or so,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Bucknell is a liberal arts school (student population of 3,400) in central Pennsylvania,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], where it was founded in 1846. The Bison won the first-ever Orange Bowl football game in 1935,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], beating the University of Miami Hurricanes.
Some of Bucknell's alumni include Theodore Van Kirk, who navigated the Enola Gay on Aug. of A. dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki; and Ralph Waite, the guy who played the dad on The Waltons.
The Pictou County Crushers - the Junior 'A' club - have a rare Sunday night game tomorrow at JBM Stadium, when they host Game 1 of their playoff series against the Yarmouth Mariners. The Mariners should be a much sterner test than the Bridgewater Lumberjacks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which isn't saying much because the Crushers rolled over Bridgewater in four straight, dominating a series that felt like it was over after Game 2. Yarmouth won four of six against Pictou County this season,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], have just eliminated the Truro Bearcats and shouldn't be discounted.
Crushers assistant coach Chad McDavid said Yarmouth is much deeper up front and more solid on 'D' than the Lumberjacks, and he expects the intensity to dial up as the games get more significant. "This is when it starts getting good," McDavid said.
