Myles Burke
Myles was the son of Jimmy and Bridget Burke and brother of Michael Joe. During the 1920s and 30s this generation experienced real hardship and austerity but were held together by strong community values and customs. Often he later would reflect on the traditional methods of farming and saving of turf employed during that era.
In the early 1940s he went down to work in farming around Cappaquin and Lismore in County Waterford. He enjoyed this part of the country and made regular visits to dances at The Boathouse, perched on the Blackwater Riverside near Cappaquin. After a while he was recalled back to the West to work in the sugar beat factory in Tuam and live with his aunt in the town.
At the tail-end of the Second World War he embraced a request to go to England to work on farms and take charge of and supervise prisoners of war in Northamptonshire.
Some of these had been members of elite German divisions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. In his own inimitable way he made good friends with these men but this frienship was sorely tested even when the lorry he was driving overturned with the prisoners in the back,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
In the late Forties he moved to Coventry and worked in the Massey Ferguson Tractor Factory and around this time he met his future wife Celia in the nearby town of Leamington Spa. Celia worked in the office of the Jaguar car plant in Coventry. In 1950 they married in Coventry and were very happy. Myles ensured that James, their son, was born a Mayoman but three months after the birth they returned to England.
Myles performed a balancing act in trying to look after his parents in Ireland and family in England which no doubt proved difficult. After the passing of his parents he kept a hold on the farm in the face of adversity.
Like many others of that period he could be seen walking cattle to and from fairs even from Louisburgh to Knockbrack. The keeping of cattle was his pride and joy with many considering him a good judge of these animals.
During the 60s and 70s he continued to work in the car factories and during periods of short term lay-offs worked in demolition for Tommy Nixon,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], originally from Clogher, and as a bus conductor for the City Corporation. Many a time the doulbe-decker bus would land up outside the house when he invited the driver in for the dinner.
He also had a sideline of selling radios, shoes, razor blades, towels, and teddy bears in Coventry and Westport. He would listen Michael Dillon's cattle mart report on one of his Russian radios from his kitchen in Coventry.
In 1981 he returned permanently to Knockbrack with his wife Celia to work the farm and enjoyed tours of various licensed premises in Westport and surrounding towns to seek out news of his own community in particular and the world in general. He liked to keep his finger on the pulse in all matters, especially in livestock prices.
His brother died in London in 1996 and gradually his old characterfull mates followed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and a further degree of loneliness set in. He was devastated by the death of his wife in 1999 and spent long spells living with his son near Dover. In 2003 he returned to Ireland with his son and family friend Mary. After a few months James obtained gainful part-time employment in England and Ireland and Myles would accompany his son on site visits and needless to say consumed refreshments on the way. He delighted in visiting the coalminers' clubs in East Kent and the Fishermen's Club in Whitby,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], North Yorkshire forging firm friendships in these close-knit communities. He always managed to fit in a trip to Coventry to meet members of the Irish community. Myles had further adventures in Holland,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Belgium and France and both Mary and James surprised him with a train ticket to Lourdes which he loved. When asked who and where was he from the reply came "Why I'm Myles from Nowhere!".
In more recent years he enjoyed staying closer to home where he was cared for diligently by Mary. He would take part in local card games some of which got extremely heated on Thurday and Saturday nights in the Half-Way, Islandeady.
Myles maintained strong links with Celia's family in North Leitrim where there was always a warm welcome,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Doctor Oliver Whyte and his team provided much care during his periods of ill health,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Myles enoyed the visit of his home help Kathy O'Donnell. He was immensely grateful to Mary, his carer, for revitalising the place and who latterly he described as "his best friend".
Much thanks are extended to Fr Pat Donnellan and all participants who contributed to a lovely Requiem Mass service on 2nd June 2012,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. It was a great tribute to Myles,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
