At the other end of the price spectrum, Aerosoles established itself as a comfort brand back in 1987, but now its new design team is pushing the fashion quotient even harder, including shoes with heels as high as 3 inches for prices well under $100. "We have double-digit sales figures for some styles," Sadick says. "Women are demanding to look great and feel great."
Meanwhile, Cole Haan, the mid-luxury brand, hired Thompson, a former Nike executive, who promptly designed a line of dress shoes incorporating Nike Air technology. "Consumers are very savvy and aware, and compromise is not in their vocabulary, particularly at our price points," Thompson says.
