Newfoundland leads nation in child poverty,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Child poverty: It's a problem that won't go away,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. They organized a nation-wide wake-up call on Wednesday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. And it started right here in St,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. John's,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Only weeks away from the year 2000,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the situation is worse instead of better. In some provinces,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], child poverty has as much as doubled. In Newfoundland, it's officially remained the same. But people who run drop-in centres tell a different story. Deborah Capps of Brighter Futures: "I see more children that look hungry and pale. They don't have a lot of energy."
Julia Shea is a single mother on welfare: "On occasion,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I haven't had milk for my son."
Deborah Capps: "I've seen families with young children and they come to play group and all the children do for half an hour is eat,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]."
Julia Shea: "Gabriel comes first. Most mornings I don't eat breakfast or lunch."
Deborah Capps: "You have families who are coming who don't have any warm clothes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the children wearing T-shirts and shorts and sneakers in the winter."
Julia Shea: "This is good clothing but it's not mine,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. It's borrowed."
Town Crier: "Let's start a wake-up call by going outside and making lots of noise,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]."
And so they headed outside to do just that. Newfoundland still has the highest poverty rate in the country. One in five children comes from a family with an income below the poverty level. But many other provinces are catching up rapidly. If the trend continues,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Newfoundland's rate could soon become the national rate.
Perceived frontrunner Justin Trudeau made a passionate plea for the party's top job during an event the Liberal Party called a "national showcase" in Toronto on Saturday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Flip through the interactive magazine to see stories you may have missed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
