A different kind of student,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
SAN MARCOS -- College sophomore Johnny Slagle slipped into a second-row center seat for chemistry. Nothing unusual there -- in all his classes, he said, he sits front and center to show respect for his professors.
He has the same casual look as the student seated next to him: khaki cargo shorts, giant sneakers, plain silver men's watch. They could almost pass as brothers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], except that Johnny lacks the pierced eyebrows and doesn't need to shave.
Size singles Johnny out from his 30,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 classmates at Palomar College. When he started three semesters ago,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he likely was the shortest one on campus, being,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], at the time, 11 years old.
The littlest freshman's college-professor father, John, took algebra and computer science classes alongside him, because the boy was too young to leave alone.
This semester, Johnny's father is back in algebra class,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], this time tagging along with Johnny's 9-year-old sister, Tatiana, who has just started at Palomar. To help her prepare for her first test recently, he took off work two days to tutor her.
Johnny, meanwhile,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], recalled how people stared at first. see a kid sitting there and they think it's a joke. They think someone put me in there to make them feel stupid. Then they see that I'm there to learn, just like them, and now nobody says anything. being in college is nothing new, especially after the 1990s, when community colleges statewide experienced a surge in underaged students in the arts and music classes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as cash-strapped public schools cut back on nonacademic programs.
At Palomar,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], officials estimate 6 percent of their students are younger than 18, although the vast majority are taking noncredit classes or are attending part time like Tatiana, who takes just one class.
However, in Johnny's case -- to be 13 and in college full time -- that is exceptional.
'Not competing'
not racing anybody. He's not competing against anybody. in math and then taught at various universities, said that although his heart was in teaching, he went into business to make more money. At 60, he is self-employed as a commercial real-estate appraiser and part-time math professor at Palomar.
It was as a professor that he officially introduced his son to college-level calculus.
Johnny said: want everyone to know that I earned the 'A' I got in his class. I didn't get any special treatment. the Slagles readily admit their children are bright, they believe they are not geniuses. What persuaded Slagle to take his children's education into his own hands with home-schooling was his experience with the traditional education of his eight other children from previous marriages.
ask them, 'How is school going?' and they say, 'Fine.' You ask, 'Did you do your homework?' And they say, 'Yes.' You have no way of assessing your child's progress, said Slagle.
not the teachers' fault. They have 35 kids in the classroom, he added. not the schools' fault. They've got plenty of worries. also makes Johnny and Tatiana different from their Palomar classmates is that they still are technically in primary and high school. They take their state-approved, age-appropriate curriculum at home concurrently with their college classes. Tatiana is in the fourth grade; her brother is in the ninth.
'Books are better'
Johnny prefers the college work. books I had in regular school just do a little at a time. I like going into subjects deeper. In college, all the books are better. school means double homework. Johnny estimates he spends at least five hours each day doing homework. daily. And he takes karate and piano lessons.
Tatiana takes violin and piano lessons.
Both speak Portuguese and visit their mother's homeland regularly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
What is striking about this high-achieving household is the relaxed tempo. Tatiana takes time out each day for a nature walk. She said she has identified every species of bird, including quail and red-tail hawk, on their new hillside home overlooking northeast San Marcos.
like to see them in the sky and see all there is to see outside, said Tatiana. She also collects rocks along the way.
Johnny has his own timeline. He agrees with his parents' plan that he should take more classes than he needs to graduate from Palomar, to get a broader education and a foundation in subjects such as art, music and tennis,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], before moving on to the University of California San Diego.
The Slagles' goal is for Johnny to have a bachelor of science in computer science by 19, and then for him to work in computer programming or graphics.
started liking computers ever since I found out that there are video games on them, he said. Then he took his first college class in Visual Basic, a programming course, and saw the future. He was 12.
Plans for the future
know how when you really like something you can do it for hours and hours? he asked. what it's like for me. My fun is different than other people's fun,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I guess. plans to make a fortune and spend it on his parents. want to buy a house for my mom. A big house,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a new one. A nice one, he said. want to pay my parents back. They spend so much money on me all the time. have worries, said Johnny. worry all the time, if I'm going to be prepared. I worry about if I'm going to get all my homework done, if I'm going to be prepared. Jared, Palomar student government vice president,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], was soliciting votes in the commons for an upcoming campus election when he overheard Johnny talking about his big plans.
don't know, said Johnny,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as Jared appeared stunned that anybody so smart couldn't care less about such things. He pointed to the computerized list of students posted months ago on the commons wall.
