Celebrations in Africa as shoes arrive,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
And so began a quest by 612 ABC Radio Brisbane's Mornings program to help Danny Underwood collect what he hoped would be 30,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 shoes for the orphans at the Ebenezer Orphanage in Levingstone, Zambia.
The March Into Africa Appeal did that and more.
In less than three weeks, the people of the Gold Coast,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast donated their old shoes to collection points across the region.
In the final count, not 30,000, not 50,000 but 76,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],997 pairs of shoes were collected.
The huge response though posed some unforeseen problems.
Namely,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], instead of one shipping container to load,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], five had to be purchased and packed by Mr Underwood.
The first left Brisbane on December 11th last year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
After a long journey by sea and land they arrived yesterday at the Zambian orphanage,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"All the children are so happy and can't believe their eyes," says Ranji Chara from the Ebenezer Orphanage.
Ranji describes the children's reaction when thousands of shoes spilled out of the first container; "There were screams and shouts and clapping and laughing."
We spread them all out on the ground and the children lined up waiting their turn to find their shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"It was an overwhelming experience to see all the children having a pair of shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]."
The children's lives will change entirely,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], says Ranji.
"According to our money [shoes] are very expensive here. Winter is coming soon and most of the children come either bare feet or with open pair of slippers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which is very, very cold at that time."
Danny Underwood says it's marvellous to hear the news. The challenges of customs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], finding transport,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], making an inventory of thousands of shoes and even pirates were "all worth it".
Danny says it wouldn't have happened without ABC listeners,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"Right across the community it's been a sensational effort."
The orphanage is overflowing with gratitude says Ranji, "If you could only see the smiles on the children's faces, I think all the trouble was worth that."
